Part 2 THE TAKE OFF

So the step by step

  • Just do a page flip on the plan pages so you can tell what it is a foot store or a condo or a office
  • Next READ all the notes and mark all the notes so you can see the important stuff to that bid
  • Same as above Read the General Requirements and Proposals

Review of the Scale Master Pro XE

i just got the Scale master  pro xe 6135  Calculated Industries 6135 Scale Master ProXE Advanced Digital Plan Measureit is a bit different then the old model but i have had no trouble with moving to it from my ageing old unit of 5 years i love this brand and it will be the main tool in my takeoff kit

I would advise not going for the pc link cableCalculated Industries 5006 Scale Master ProXE PC Interface Cable for the 6135 Scale Master ProXE it is not worth the time or cash

Laying out a new bid PART 1

SO you have a new project to bid it is not that hard. It is easer than Tiger Woods explaining all of the the women poping out of the woodwork to his wife.;)

In working on a new bid it is so important to lay out your bid properly. I like to lay out in this order
  • Lighting – counts only
  • Gear / electrical panels -counts only
  • Feeders – complete take off
  • Outlets – complete take off
  • Switches & lighting control – complete take off from panel to light
  • Fire system
  • Structured cabling, CAT-6, Phone ect.
  • Other - for the odd stuff

The reason I like to start with the lighting and Gear is to get a feel for the building and a general layout for it and to get the counts out to the venders. They will be looking for time just like we will to complete this in today’s fast bidding market.

i get asked a lot of questions as a electrical instructor at a training class in the NJ/NYC area this is 1 i got this weekend

What is the best thing you can think of for a new guy starting out in the electrical contracting business

my reply

i think the biggest thing is not to take a job/contract that will put you out of business if you do not get paided. look you have worked very hard to get all of your electrical permits, license, federal id and all the other stuff you need and the time you but in is very large. do not forget the cash you have in it to!

do you want to put all of this in someone who you just met waving a contract with no payment bond with your all you cash? i do not think i can! i do not want a chance that the years i worked to get to this point can all go away on someone else going out of business.
